The tea industry has long harped on the beverage’s medicinal qualities. In a new campaign aimed at youngsters, it is now being packaged as a panacea for lifestyle disorders.

“Junk food, late nights, lack of exercise. You could do with a few drinks,” say full-page newspaper advertisements published by the tea industry and the state-run Tea Board.

Tea has long been claimed to have medicinal value. But this is perhaps the first time the beverage is being promoted to tackle lifestyle-related complications.

According to the Indian Tea Association (ITA), the antioxidant quality of tea is much higher than several vegetables like spinach, lettuce, cauliflower, garlic and carrot.

“Through recent research it has been discovered that tea is one of the richest source of antioxidants that help our body detoxify harmful free radicals that work against our immunity system,” said an ITA official.

Antioxidants in tea help reduce the risk of heart diseases, stroke and certain types of cancer such as oral, pancreatic and prostrate..

The campaign is aimed at attracting youngsters — many with unhealthy lifestyles, but fitness conscious — to drinking tea.
